A network for research and education
TUM.wood brings together eleven professorships at the Technical University of Munich, working in an interdisciplinary manner on the resource of wood. The group aims to fully exploit the potential of this renewable raw material, enhance its contribution to sustainable resource use, and pave the way for a new wood-based era. The research covers the entire value chain – from its origins in the forest, through material development and innovative construction applications, to reuse and recycling strategies. The focus is on the technical, architectural, ecological, and economic possibilities of this versatile material.
The collaboration promotes young scientists in the fields of forestry and wood, and specifically focuses on continuing education programs to make current knowledge and innovations accessible to professionals and practitioners. An interdisciplinary teaching program also opens new development perspectives for students from other fields. TUM.wood combines expertise from science, architecture, forestry, the wood industry, and construction practices. The initiative enhances public awareness of wood as a forward-looking resource with climate protection potential, identifies existing obstacles to its broader adoption, and develops viable solutions. At the same time, TUM.wood serves as a central information platform for professionals, policymakers, authorities, and the media.
